From mythical hunters to celestial twins, the winter sky is packed with bright stars and fascinating deep-sky objects that are easy to spot with the naked eye.

Orion the Hunter: The Winter AnchorNo discussion of the winter sky is complete without Orion, the undisputed king of the cold-weather constellations. Dominating the southern sky from December through February, Orion is the perfect starting point for any stargazing excursion. The constellation is instantly recognizable by its “belt,” a perfectly straight line of three bright stars: Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka. Canis Major is a prized winter constellation because it contains Sirius, the brightest star in the entire night sky. Also known as the “Dog Star,” Sirius sparkles with a brilliant blue-white intensity that often flashes with rainbow colors when low on the horizon due to atmospheric turbulence.Sirius is exceptionally bright not because it is massive, but because it is relatively close to Earth, sitting just 8.6 light-years away. The rest of the constellation forms a distinct stick-figure shape of a dog standing on its hind legs. In Greek mythology, these stars represent the inseparable twin brothers of Helen of Troy. Gemini is exceptionally easy to identify because Castor and Pollux sit nearly parallel to each other, marking the heads of the twins, while two long lines of fainter stars extend downward toward Orion to form their bodies.While the two lead stars look like a pair, they are quite different. Pollux is an orange giant star and the brighter of the two, located about 34 light-years away.
